Patrick William Sammon

Patrick William Sammon of West Pittston passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 26, 2021, following an illness. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Patrick was born on Oct. 28, 1946, in Scranton to John P. and Margaret (Schmitt) Sammon. He attended Scranton Preparatory School and was a graduate of West Pittston High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from King’s College.

Upon graduation from King’s, he continued his family’s tradition of military service by enlisting in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He served in the operations department aboard the USS America, with one year in the Gulf of Tonkin. His last year of service was at the Pentagon attached to the highest-level briefing team of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). He was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for meritorious achievement or service in a joint duty capacity.

Patrick spent over 48 years as an accomplished third-generation commercial real estate broker and appraiser, first with his father, John P. Sammon, from whom he learned so much, then on his own, and most recently with Hinerfeld Commercial Real Estate, Scranton, where he had many beloved colleagues and friends.

He was one of the youngest individuals ever awarded the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers’ prestigious MAI Designation and taught real estate courses for several years at Luzerne County Community College. He was a member of the National Association of Realtors, Pennsylvania Association of Realtors, Greater Wilkes-Barre Board of Realtors and the Greater Scranton Board of Realtors.

Patrick was a member of the Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce, serving two two-year terms on the board of directors. He was a longtime member of the Boy Scouts of America (Troop 352 – West Pittston), serving at the troop, district and council levels.

Patrick spent most of his life in West Pittston. He was a member of West Pittston Tomorrow and was an integral part of West Pittston’s recovery following the 2011 flood.

He was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the Pennsylvania Society, Westmoreland Club and Fox Hill Country Club.

Patrick was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish, Pittston.

He was a kind and decent man who loved his family and country. He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Some of his happiest moments were spent with his grandchildren. He was a man of faith with great integrity, a true gentleman until the end. He was gracious and caring to everyone he met. If business success is defined by market share or total revenues, he may have been bested by others. But if getting to the heart of the matter or getting to the truth that mattered — as best as one could — Patrick was the most successful man we ever knew.

He is survived by his wife, the former Charlene Ross; also surviving him are his children, Charles; Margaret Parsons and husband, Patrick; and Mary Quirk and husband, Andrew; his grandchildren, Lilly and William Patrick Sammon, and Harry, Charlotte and Anna Quirk; his siblings, Jean Schlosser and husband, John; John and wife, Nina; Ellen Bradley and husband, Stuart; Neil and wife, Laura; Molly Yordy; and Margaret Marthinsen and husband, Alan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Patrick’s family would like to thank Dr. Colin Quinn and his entire staff at the ALS Clinic at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, the Weinberg ALS Center at Jefferson University Hospitals, the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center, Dr. Kelly Williams of Northeastern Rehabilitation Associates, Dr. John Citti, Hospice of the Sacred Heart and Angela’s Touch.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no calling hours and a private Mass will be held. Patrick will be accorded full military honors. Arrangements are entrusted to the Eugene A. Cusick Funeral Home, Scranton.

It was Patrick’s wish that you donate to the ALS Association in lieu of flowers.
